Foodborne Diseases Affect 48 million Americans a Year

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in US said around 48 million Americans get sick every year due to foodborne diseases.

According to the agency’s report, 128,000 peole are hospitalised and 3,000 die from pathogens each year.

The report found salmonella was the leading cause of estimated hospitalisations and deaths, responsible for about 28% of deaths and 35% of hospitaliaations due to known pathogens transmitted by food.

Almost 90% of estimated illnesses, hospitalisations and deaths were due to seven pathogens – salmonella, norovirus, campylobacter, toxoplasma, E coli O157, listeria and clostridium perfringens.
