Confirming a product’s stability provides important information to manufacturers who can then revise their formula to improve the durability of these items.
Yet if this is not possible, the manufacturer will have gained important information relating to the conditions required for the products’ safe transportation and storage.
To fulfil this important requirement in the product testing process, Thermolab provides a range of stability chambers, ovens, incubators and cooling units.
Thermolab is an Indian company represented by DJA in North America.
“They do the walk-in stability chambers and holding chambers for testing,” says Rusty Nelson, DJA vice-president and general manager.
“What you’ll have is three different chambers where you’re testing at this humidity, at this temperature, what the lifecycle is for the product. And you’ll do that for one year in this chamber. In the next chamber will be a different heat and humidity for a three-month period. In the next chamber, there’ll be a higher temperature, a higher humidity, maybe for three months or less.
“So their chambers are modular, they go together very quickly, they’ve got special software that monitors the heat inside that chamber, and alarms. If for some reason the temperature and humidity are not being maintained, it all goes back to a single console. So you can be in another room in the facility and monitoring all of your chambers.
“Products are tested. You can go anywhere from food, to chemical, to cosmetic, to pharmaceutical.”
Consistent temperature controls
Thermolab’s Walk-In BOD Incubator (Bio-Oxygen Demand) is used to ensure precise and consistent temperatures are sustained when analysing the growth of tissue cultures, as well as bacterial storage and incubation. This is particularly important in the development of new treatments in the pharmaceutical industry.
“Let’s say they want to know how long your tablets will last, when will they expire,” adds Rusty. “They’ll put a series of tablets in a chamber at a certain temperature and a certain humidity. And they come in once a week to test the tablets to see if they’re still active, if they’re starting to degrade. Then they can go back and modify their formula to make it last longer.”
Thermolab’s Walk-In Stability Chamber was developed specifically to handle the demands of environmental tests and stability assessments for products. Stability rooms were designed in accordance with FDA / ICH requirements, offering precise optimal control and consistency in terms of humidity, temperature and other climatic conditions.
Each chamber is able to consistently create the exact conditions needed to assess a product’s structural integrity across an extensive range of test cycles, with data accurately recorded. All units have automated controls, combined with energy efficiency and a diverse number of process options required for studies into product stability.
For applications requiring testing at high temperatures, Thermolab offers its Oven solution. This unit is able to replicate the high temperatures that may found during curing and drying.
Should cold temperatures be required for product testing, Thermolab has developed Cooling Cabinets. These are particularly useful when verifying raw materials or cold storage of vaccines.
