Dole launches ‘The Dole Way’ sustainability campaign

In March 2021, Dole Food Company announced the launch of an integrated sustainability campaign aimed at amplifying its sustainability goals launched in 2020 under ‘The Dole Way’.

According to Dole, ‘the Dole Way campaign illustrates a path of transformation that will recognise impact and communicate goals, both on a global and local scale’.

Moreover, in January 2020, Dole announced that 11 banana farms in Colombia and two in Ecuador had achieved certification to the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) International Water Stewardship Standard for taking water management to a higher level in Dole’s own farming and suppliers’ growing and sourcing operations.

Focusing on sustainability will help Dole continue to extend its consumer base. More consumers are becoming increasingly interested about the impact products they are consuming or purchasing have on the environment. As a result, brands are tapping into the market and looking at ways to introduce sustainable features to their products.

In the company’s 2020 Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability Report, Dole identified water conservation and optimisation as the most relevant and impactful sustainable practice across its operations. The company aims to achieve 100% optimised water management on all farms managed by Dole and for all packing facilities by 2025.

Dole Asia issues the Dole Promise

In June 2020, Dole Asia issued ‘The Dole Promise’, pledging to tackle global malnutrition and food insecurity, as well as to improve the sustainability of its own operations and the wellbeing of its workers and farmers.

Dole Asia, pledged to end the use of petroleum-based plastic packaging, reduce its fruit waste to zero and remove all processed sugar from its products and access to sustainable nutrition for 1 billion people by 2025. Moreover, by 2030, the company said it would strive to make its operations carbon neutral.

The company highlights that the impacts of the Covid-19 global pandemic could see 265 million additional people pushed to the brink of starvation. As well this, challenges of climate change, resource waste and declining natural resources still need addressing. As a result the company aims to heavily invest in sustainability efforts within its own business over the next few years.

Furthermore, Dole is partnering with Solidaridad, an international civil society organisation with experience in creating fair and sustainable supply chains from producer to consumer across five continents.

Dole must continue to invest in sustainability in a bid to keep up with rivals

Dole’s rival Del Monte, has also been increasing its investment in sustainability, therefore this is an area Dole will need to continue expanding in.

In 2020, Del Monte Produce announced that it has joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which aims to drive ambitious climate change action in the private sector by enabling companies to set science-based emissions reduction targets. Fresh Del Monte will work with SBTi to develop its target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
