Morton Salt opens new food lab in Illinois, US

A subsidiary of K+S Group, Morton Salt, has opened new state-of-the art food lab at its research and development (R&D) centre in Elgin, Illinois, US, which will explore the next generation of reduced sodium solutions.

The new food lab will strengthen the firm’s R&D capabilities and innovation pipeline.

The lab, which has been established with an investment of $1m, features new equipment and 1,300ft² of innovation space.

The food lab will enable the company’s team of food scientists and technical staff to focus the ever-changing needs of consumers and customers in the food industry.

The facility will allow Morton Salt to focus on new product development, enhanced formulations, application testing, and technical support.

Morton Salt technology and innovation director John MacKinnon said that one of the most important aspects of this investment in the R&D centre is the value it will create for customers.

"Morton is a long-time partner to the food industry and our new food lab enables us to dial up our level of technical support throughout their development cycle while delivering on their future needs, particularly in the area of sodium reduction," MacKinnon.

"Morton Salt has explored and offered reduced sodium solutions for more than 40 years, and with this latest investment in a new food lab, we will continue working on providing innovative and customised solutions that meet the needs of our customers and consumers."

Morton Salt’s R&D centre is the main innovation hub for the company’s North American business and delivers innovation in food and across its other key categories.
