Grieg NL to construct indoor aquaculture facility in Newfoundland

Grieg NL, a Norway-based fish farming company, specialising in Atlantic salmon, is planning to construct the world’s largest hatchery and nursery facility in Marystown, Newfoundland, Canada, with an investment of approximately $200m.

The Norwegian fish company has chosen AMG Norway, a subsidiary of the Aqua Maof Group to construct this hatchery and nursery facility

The Grieg NL new facility will deploy Aqua Maof's cutting edge RAS technology, and will have the capacity to produce seven million smolt, which will be equivalent to 1,500grams. It will also feature 11 sea-cage sites for the subsequent grow out and harvest of 33,000 annual tonnes of Atlantic salmon.

Construction of the hatchery is expected to be completed by next year and the construction of the grow-out sites set to begin in the same year.

The company expects that the facility's yearly production would reach 33,000 tonnes by 2023, which will more than double Newfoundland and Labrador's current production of Atlantic salmon.
