Cargill gains Non-GMO Project Verification for food ingredients

Cargill, a global food company, has taken the initiative to gain Non-GMO Project Verification for three of its food ingredients, in the wake of growing demand for non-GMO foods.

Three products of Cargill's that are now GMO Project Verified include erythritol, cane sugar and high oleic sunflower oil. All of these products are now commercially available.

Cargill Starches and Sweeteners North America managing director Mike Wagner said: “Consumer demand for non-GMO food and beverages is growing, and Cargill is responding.

“We're delighted to work with the Non-GMO Project, the leading verifier of non-GMO products in the United States.

"Their distinctive trademark is the most recognised symbol for non-GMO products in the country.

“The Non-GMO Project's mission is to preserve and build sources of non-GMO products, educate consumers, and provide verified non-GMO choices.

“Achieving this mission requires participation by companies of all sizes, including supply-chain leaders like Cargill that can provide large-scale availability of non-GMO food ingredients.”

The initiative was taken-up by the company in order to help food and beverage manufacturers, and foodservice operators meet the growing demand for non-GMO products and satisfy consumers' preferences.

According to Packaged Facts, the demand for the GMO products is expected to rise by 12% annually through 2018.

The annual sales of Non-GMO Project Verified products have amplified from $348.8m in 2010 to more than $19bn as of March this year.

Cargill has chosen NSF International, an independent organisation that writes standards, and tests and certifies products for various industries, as its Technical Administrator for Non-GMO Verified ingredients.
