Six employees of OSI Group subsidiary arrested for selling expired meat products in China

Six employees from a unit of US food supplier OSI Group have been arrested by Chinese authorities for alleged involvement in the sale of expired meat products to fast food companies.

The group previously supplied meat to companies including McDonald’s and KFC, according to AFP.

Authorities had previously detained six officials of Shanghai Husi Food, which is a subsidiary of OSI. It operated a factory that was shut down in July on account of mixing expired meat with fresh products.

In a statement, the company said, “OSI Group confirms that six employees of Shanghai Husi have now been arrested following detention by authorities. OSI Group will continue to cooperate fully and in good faith with the authorities.”

However, the identity of the six people arrested has not been divulged.

In addition to the two previously mentioned companies, OSI’s customers in China include Pizza Hut, coffee chain Starbucks, Burger King, 7-Eleven convenience stores and Papa John’s Pizza.

Following the incident, the Chinese government will investigate OSI. The company will also be carrying out an internal probe to look into the scandal.
