Bimbo Bakeries to set up new bakery facility in US

Bimbo Bakeries USA, the American arm of Mexican baking company Grupo Bimbo, is planning to set up a new $75m bakery facility in Pennsylvania, US, that will create 100 new jobs.

The plant will be built in Upper Macungie Township, on a 30-acre site that was purchased by the company in October.

The 240,000ft² LEED-certified facility will produce bread and buns for the north-eastern US.

Bimbo Bakeries USA spokesman David Margulies said that the new bakery will enable the company to produce high-quality, fresh baked goods, and will take advantage of the latest baking technology to make its operations more efficient.

"Our new bakeries use less energy, are friendlier to the environment, allow more efficient production and help us maintain the highest quality standards," Margulies added.

Construction of the new facility is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year, while the operations are expected to begin in early 2014.

Bimbo Bakeries, based in Horsham, Pennsylvania, has more than 70 bakeries across the US, and its brands include Arnold, Ball Park, Bimbo, Boboli, Brownberry, Entenmann’s, Earthgrains, Sara Lee, and Tia Rosa.

In the recent years, the company has significantly expanded its US operations with the acquisition of the North American Fresh Bakery business of Sara Lee.

Through the acquisition, valued at $709m, Bimbo Bakeries USA gained ownership of a collection of leading regional bakery brands, such as Grandma Sycamore’s, Heiner’s and Rainbo, as well as 41 facilities in the US and nearly 4,800 distribution routes.
