Sudan to Build Sugar Plant

Mashkour sugar company in Sudan has secured a $150m fund from EXIM Bank in India to build a 140,000t sugar factory by 2014.

The company said the facility will also produce 30 million litres of ethanol.

Mashkour executive director Mohamed Abdelatti Abdalla said the factory will produce sugar, ethanol and electricity in the first phase, and animal feed, dairy and meat in a second phase after five years.

“The total cost of the project is $280m and the balance of the money will be provided by shareholders,” Abdalla said.

The company expects to start construction by the end of the month.

The unit will produce an initial crop of 70,000t of sugar and 15 million litres of ethanol in November 2013.

The first phase operation is expected to annually earn $140m, while the second phase will raise it to $200m, the company said.
