Dannon Cuts Carbon Footprint

The Dannon Company reduced its overall carbon footprint by 10% in 2009, according to the company’s corporate social responsibility report.

The US food and beverage producer said it has reduced the quantity of its primary packaging by 20% on a per-ounce basis since 2004.

Dannon purchased Green-e certified renewable energy credits from Langdon Wind Center for an amount equivalent to the electricity it uses at all its facilities.

Nearly 95% of the company’s products are transported in wooden pallets that are sourced from re-plantable and renewable forests, it said.

The company is also planning to procure most of its fresh milk from local producers close to its plants to reduce transportation emissions.

Dannon ships about 85% of its products via trucking companies that participate in the Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay transportation programme.
