General Mills to Focus on Low-Sodium Products

Sodium content will be reduced by 20% in General Mills brand cereals, soups, snacks and other products by 2015, as regulators and consumers push for healthier products.

The Minneapolis-based food maker said the reductions will affect about 600 items, nearly 40% of its product line.

General Mills said it has already reduced the sodium content in 31% of its product portfolio which includes 16% in Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios and 36% in Chex Snack Mixes.

Kraft and ConAgra Foods have announced a sodium reduction of 10% and 20%, respectively, in their products while Campbell Soup declared a 35% sodium cut in SpaghettiOs canned pasta.
