Melamine Found in Chinese Milk Products

Guizhou health authorities in China have found milk products containing melamine – the same substance that killed at least six and sickened nearly 300,000 children in 2008 – in dairy products made by Chinese companies.

Melamine can cause kidney stones. The chemical is usually used for making plastics, fertilisers and concrete.

The high nitrogen content of the chemical allows protein levels to appear higher when it is added to milk or animal feed.

The health department in Guizhou province has stopped the sales of dairy products made by three Chinese companies, Reuters said quoting the China Daily newspaper.

Shandong Zibo Lusaier Dairy, Liaoning Tieling Wuzhou Food and Laoting Kaida Refrigeration had to recall products from stores in China following the find.

Provincial health bureaus have stepped up their tests on milk following the first melamine incident, which made headlines around the world and saw two perpetrators executed just recently.
