New UV-Stable Additive for Dairy Packaging

Liquid colour and additive maker ColorMatrix has developed a new light-blocking additive for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) dairy packaging, the company said.

ColorMatrix said Lactra is an opaque white liquid additive that protects against ultraviolet rays and visible light at wavelengths up to 550nm.

The additive is also applicable for both single and multi-layer PET dairy containers such as milk, yoghurt and dairy beverages, the company said.

Traditional opaque white colourant systems are typically dosed at around 20% while Lactra is used at an additional rate of only 6-8% for equivalent light-blocking performance.

The company’s CoolRun liquid carrier system enables the additive to achieve maximum light reflection from minimal product.

ColorMatrix has also developed Amosorb SolO2 PET barrier technology, which extends product protection and shelf-life in oxygen-sensitive beverages such as beers, wines and juices.
