FSA Gets Technical in Battle Against Salt

The UK’s Food Standards Agency is creating an application for the iPhone and iPod touch as part of its campaign against salt.

The FSA Salt application helps users monitor daily salt consumption.

Consumers can enter the amount of salt per 100 grams that appears on labels.

The application can tell consumers if it is a healthy level for that product and if it should be consumed on a regular basis.

The FSA has been targeting salt through television, radio and print commercials with a particular focus on pizza, pasta sauce, sandwiches and ready meals.

An FSA survey found that 75% of people in the UK were unaware of the salt content in some foods, including breakfast cereal.

It also uncovered misconceptions over the cost of food.

Of those surveyed, 40% said they thought value food ranges contained more salt, when, according to the FSA, these lines often contained the least amount.
