Wright County to Ship Eggs After Major Recall

US-based Wright County Egg will resume supplies of eggs to the consumer market, following its link to the multi-scale salmonella enteritidis outbreak, which sickened 1,469 people in May.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) verified that the company has taken the necessary corrective measures to address four pathways of contamination that may have contributed to the outbreak.

As a result of the decision, Wright County will distribute eggs from two of its hen houses on one of its six farms.

FDA commissioner Margaret Hamburg said: “During the outbreak, I said that FDA would not agree to the sale of eggs to consumers from Wright County Egg until we had confidence that they could be shipped and consumed safely.

“After four months of intensive work by the company and oversight, testing, and inspections by the FDA, I am satisfied that time has come.”

The FDA inspections of Wright County Egg’s facilities involved 13 investigators.

During the past six weeks, the FDA collected and analysed 40 feed samples, 236 environmental samples and 13,900 shell eggs.

In August this year Wright Country Egg recalled 380 million eggs following the outbreak of the pathogen.
