The spinning cone column celebrates 40 years of flavour

The Spinning Cone Column (SCC), a technology that allows the recovery of flavour profiles from a variety of products, was developed by Australian firm Flavourtech almost 40 years ago and since then, it has been in constant use by companies worldwide.

Until recently, the application has been limited to high volume applications with the two models having nominal capacities of 1,000L/hr and 10,000L/hr.

In response to customer demand, Flavourtech has developed a smaller, compact model, the SCC100. This system retains all the benefits of the larger spinning cone systems and can be used for the processing of high value, low volume materials or for research and development.

Existing users can use it to further enhance aroma profiles or to access a new share of the market by processing small volumes of extremely high value products.

Inside the spinning cone column

The spinning cone column is a uniquely efficient counter-current liquid-gas contacting device, i.e. a distillation or stripping column. The spinning cone column is unique in its use of gentle mechanical forces to enhance inter-phase contact. The SCC100 has been designed to fit within a laboratory or pilot plant. It is manufactured on a compact skid with lockable castors and includes heat exchangers, control panel, condenser and pumps.

The SCC100 can be used to quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively collect and concentrate aroma compounds from coffee and tea extracts, fruit and vegetable juices, evaporator condensate and reconcentrate first-pass aroma.

With the installation of the new SCC100, existing customers will be able to develop new flavour profiles that they can then translate to their larger commercial systems without impacting their production lines. Large companies that have been considering the SCC for various processes can also invest in the smaller SCC100 to determine the results on new products. This will allow them to slowly build their customer base and explore new products.

The SCC100 is also ideal for start-up companies that wish to dip their toe in the market without high set up costs. The SCC100 can be installed quickly and easily and its control panel ensures that the user knows exactly what is happening at all components of the system.
