Star Natural Meats recalls raw pork sausage products in US

US-based Star Natural Meats has initiated a recall of nearly 20,000lbs of raw, non-intact pork sausage products as a result of misbranding and undeclared allergens.

According to the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the recalled products contain milk and soy, which are known allergens but were not declared on the product label.

Additionally, the products contain restricted ingredients such as sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate, which are also not specified on the finished product label.

The problem was initially identified on 3 August by FSIS personnel during routine label verification procedures.

Products that are subject to recall include individual packages of various weights of ‘Loukaniko Greek Bran – Made in the USA’ pork sausage, which are said to bear the establishment number ‘EST. 48109’ inside the USDA mark of inspection.

They were not labelled with a lot code or expiration date.

The pork sausage items were produced on various dates from 23 February 2017 to 3 August 2018 and were shipped to retail locations in Astoria, New York.

FSIS has classified the recall as Class I, which represents a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or even death.

However, no confirmed reports of adverse reactions or illness have been reported due to the consumption of these products to date.

FSIS is also concerned that some products may already be in consumers’ home refrigerators and freezers.

Anyone concerned about an injury or illness is advised to contact a healthcare provider.

Furthermore, FSIS has urged consumers not to eat the products and instead either throw them away or return them to their place of purchase.
