US red meat, turkey and butter stocks up in September

Frozen red meat, turkey and butter stocks on 30 September were higher than last year’s levels, but chicken and cheese stocks were lower, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s latest Cold Storage report.

Frozen red meat stocks totalled 944Mlb, up 5% from August 2011 and up 12% year-on-year.

Frozen pork stocks were 490Mlb, up 11% from August and up 16% year-on-year, while beef stocks were 428Mlb, marginally down from the August levels but up 8% from the previous year.

Total frozen poultry stocks were 1.19 billion lb, a marginal increase from 1.18 billion lb in 2010.

Frozen turkey stocks totalled 515Mlb, down 2% from August 2011,but up 9% year-on-year, while total chicken stocks were 673Mlb, down 3% from previous month and down 5% from last year.

Natural cheese stocks were 1.04 billion lb, down 2% from the previous month and previous year, while butter stocks totalled 151Mlb, down 9% from August but up 16% from September 2010.

Frozen egg stocks were 31Mlb, up 3% from August and up 22% from the previous year.
