Maple Leaf opens commercial bakery in Canada

Canadian consumer packaged food company Maple Leaf Foods has opened a 385,000ft² commercial bakery in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in order to boost manufacturing efficiencies.

The bakery, which has been built with an investment of C$100m (US$97.62m), will produce white and wholewheat breads, buns, English muffins and tortillas using 100% Canadian wheat.

Maple Leaf Foods president and CEO Michael McCain said that the new bakery provides the company with dedicated space to support new product innovation.

According to the company, the bakery will operate to the highest standards of productivity, quality assurance and environmental management.

It has been designed to obtain certification under the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) New Construction programme, a green building rating system that covers a set of environmental performance criteria, the company said.

Maple Leaf Foods, headquartered in Toronto, produces bakery products and meat products, and has operations across Canada and in the US, UK, Asia and Mexico.
