Nestle Prepared Foods recalls chicken products due to misbranding

US-based Nestle Prepared Foods Company has decided to recall nearly 29,002lb of chicken products labelled as Lean Cuisine Fettuccini Alfredo due to misbranding and undeclared allergens.

According to the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the product contains undeclared soy, a known allergen.

The product subject to recall includes a 9.25oz retail carton containing ‘Lean Cuisine favourites Fettuccini Alfredo tender pasta with a creamy cheese sauce’ with an establishment number ‘P27333’ printed on the package next to the lot code.

FSIS noted that the frozen Lean Cuisine Fettuccini Alfredo products were manufactured and packaged last month before being shipped to retail locations across the US.

The issue was identified by the company after it received numerous consumer complaints that the product labelled as Lean Cuisine Fettuccini Alfredo contained chicken and was not mentioned on the label or ingredients.

After receiving multiple complaints, Nestle Prepared Foods notified the problem to FSIS.

There have so far been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions as a result of the consumption of these products.

FSIS in its communication said that anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.

Consumers have been urged not to eat the products and either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. The FSIS is also concerned that some products may be in restaurant freezers and has advised them not to serve these items.

The recall has been categorised as Class I, which indicates that consumption of the product could cause serious and adverse health consequences or death.

Last December, Blue Grass Quality Meats, US, recalled 121,083lb of pork, bacon and ready-to-eat (RTE) turkey products over misbranding and the presence of undeclared allergens.
