Cargill to invest in Europe for soluble fibres production

Global food company Cargill is set to invest in Europe for the production of soluble fibres that address consumer demand for healthier products.

These soluble fibres will be added to the company’s existing portfolio of starches, sweeteners and texturisers.

They are expected to help food manufacturers to create calorie-reduced products with improved nutritional profiles.

Cargill Sweetness global strategy and business development director Jan-Peter Scheurwater said: “Calorie and sugar reduction remains a key priority for many manufacturers amid growing interest from health-conscious consumers.

‘’As a holistic provider of sweetness solutions, Cargill is addressing this need by developing fibre ingredients which enable improvement of the nutritional profile, including sugar and calorie reduction, in consumer products.”

The company claims that its new soluble fibres have the potential to reduce calories and minimise sugar content by nearly 30% in confectionery, bakery goods, fillings, cereals, ice cream and dairy.

Cargill’s investment is part of its on-going commitment to offer on-trend solutions to its customers.

Expected to be launched in 2021, the soluble fibre products will be produced using the company’s patented, advanced proprietary technology that offers both quality and taste.

Cargill Europe Starches, Sweeteners and Texturizers managing director Alain Dufait said: “This is a crucial investment to complement the broad portfolio of starches, including label-friendly functional and native starches, texturisers and sweeteners, ranging from full- to no-calorie Cargill makes available to our manufacturing customers.

“Our expanded offerings support a wide range of product formulations our customers need while helping them meet changing consumer preferences.”

Recently, the company announced plans to invest $225m to expand its integrated soybean crush and refined oils facility in Sidney, Ohio.
