Victorian farmers supported a motion yesterday [Monday] to allow the commercial sale of culled kangaroos in the state.

Victoria is unusual in banning the commercial harvesting of kangaroos for meat, and a spokesman for the State Government insisted that a commercial kangaroo meat industry was not viable because of the “relatively small number” of animals. As a result, the carcases of kangaroos currently killed by farmers with permits are either left or buried.
The Victorian Farmers Federation has called for the right to sell kangaroos that have been shot on private land. It called for a meat processing facility to be established and VFF pastoral group president Bill Bray said the meat has been proven safe.
