Swiss retail cooperative Coop has announced it will acquire a 40% stake in compatriot department store group EPA.

Leading retailer Coop will co-manage the department stores it inherits with the deal with EPA, but will take sole responsibility for the stores’ food departments. The EPA drugstore in Basle will be made over into a Coop Vitality drugstore.

Once approved by the Swiss competition authorities, the deal will be backdated to 1 February this year.

EPA operates 39 department stores and 22 restaurants in Switzerland. Last year it reported turnover of SFr800m (US$481.2m). Coop owns 11 department stores and last year posted turnover of SFr550m.
