The safety of Chinese seafood products is “well worth the confidence of EU consumers,” said the China Aquatic Products Processing and Marketing Association yesterday [Monday], and the import ban implemented by the European Union on 30 January is unfair.

The Association has urged EU officials to lift the ban, which was enforced after the EU Standing Veterinary Committee said it found potentially risky chloramphenicol residues in samples of shrimps and prawns imported from China.


Association President Zhang Mingyu said in a statement: “Based on the information the association has collected, the quality of seafood products for export from the overwhelming majority of EU-certified enterprises in China is fully up to the relevant EU standards.


“We believe that [the ban] is unfair and not based on scientific evidence for the commission to prohibit the import of seafood products.


“It is also against the World Trade Organisation rules regarding fair trade.”
