Barry Callebaut’s Cocoa Application Centre, Johor, Malaysia
Barry Callebaut, Zurich-based leading manufacturer of high-quality chocolate and cocoa products, has opened its first cocoa application centre in Asia Pacific in Pasir Gudang, Johor, Malaysia, in May 2015.
The centre was established with an aim to develop individual product solutions and innovations that are customised to the changing tastes of the consumers.
The project is a part of the company's plans to expand its global research and development capabilities, which include 18 chocolate academy centres, 12 application centres and 19 pilot plants.
Prototype and concept development is provided by the centre, as is product and process troubleshooting, sensory evaluation to industrial customers and technical assistance and training for cocoa products and ingredient research.

DuPont Nutrition & Health has opened a new Innovation Application Centre in Gurgaon, a financial and industrial city in the state of Haryana, India, in March 2015.
The cocoa application centre is located in Pasir Gudang industrial town, which is situated 35km east of Johor Bahru, Malaysia. It is located adjacent to one of the company's biggest cocoa factories in Asia Pacific.
The centre is strategically located close to the existing cocoa factory, which facilitates supply of cocoa ingredients including liquor, butter and powder. Further, the sensory experts at the factory will facilitate frequent testing and tasting that are required to create new products, applications and processes.

A total investment of $200,000 was used to construct the cocoa application centre. The facility features state-of-art equipment, a demo kitchen, work space areas and a small-scale production line.
The centre's initial focus will be on confectionery, beverage, ice cream and bakery applications and the potential offered by cocoa ingredients in the products. It will further build its capabilities in colour, flavour, matching and enhancement of the products.
The facility draws the expertise and resources of the company's strong global research and development capabilities. Products will be developed according to the tastes of the consumers in Asia Pacific, who, according to the company, are looking for more sophisticated flavours and colours. Use of cocoa in the products makes it possible to create new flavours and colours.
Those at the centre will also work closely with industrial customers to develop unique, delicious, and visually-appealing products.

Barry Callebaut has four application centres and nine chocolate and cocoa factories in Asia Pacific.
