Prestage Foods recalls 38,475lb of ground turkey

US-based Prestage Foods has ordered a recall of nearly 38,475lb of ground turkey over possible extraneous materials contamination.

According to the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the problem was identified and notified to FSIS by plant employees performing sanitation on processing equipment.

A retail location also notified the company of metal shavings in a package of ground turkey.

The recalled fresh ground turkey products were reported to have been produced between 25-26 September.

The recalled products include 1.3lb Publix ground turkey breast with natural flavourings, 1.2lb fit and active fresh ground turkey with natural flavourings, and 1.0lb ground turkey labelled as Weis markets fresh ground turkey breast.

"Prestage Foods urged consumers not to consume the specified products and to instead return them to the place of purchase or dispose of them safely."

The products were shipped to US retail distribution centres in Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.

Until now, the company did not receive any confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.
