Olymel to invest in pork processing plant in Quebec

Canadian meat processor and distributor Olymel is planning to invest C$11m ($8.3m) in its pork processing facility in St-Henri-de-Lévis, Quebec.

The company intends to expand and modernise the processing plant, which includes new equipment to enhance the efficiency levels, as well as boost the production from 40 million to almost 60 million kilograms per annum.

Starting from next week, the expansion works will add 3,000ft² to the existing building upon completion, bringing the total area to 170,000ft².

Olymel president and CEO Réjean Nadeau said: “Olymel continues to invest in modernising and developing operations at its processing facilities in order to better meet the needs of customers and markets.

“This C$11m ($8.3m) investment in St-Henri-de-Lévis is part of our commitment to remain a leader in our industry in Quebec and Canada, and to improve our competitive edge. To achieve its growth goals, Olymel has invested more than C$250m ($189m) since 2015 in both its pork and poultry sectors.”

The facility currently produces smoked sausages and emulsions such as bologna, pepperoni, salami, mock chicken and smoked ham.

The facility modernisation features addition of a smoker, chillers and production and packaging equipment to expand production of smoked products such as hams.

The expansion of the facility is expected to create 30 new jobs. The plant currently has a workforce of 530 employees.
