Dutch insect supplier Protix has acquired Fair insects, a consortium of mealworm and locust breeders.

The companies have not disclosed the financial details of the acquisition, which is reported to be in line with Protix’s growth strategy.

This acquisition will see the company further enhance its product portfolio and offer protein rich foods, meat replacements and healthy beverages to a wide range of customers.

"We can further work towards healthy nutrition for all living creatures on this planet and enable a low-footprint society."

Since 2009, Protix has been engaged in the development of novel technologies and sustainable insect-based products in order to explore new opportunities.

Protix CEO Kees Aarts said: "We are very excited by this new Protix company. With the diversification of additional species, we can offer the broader range of exciting products our customers have requested over the years.

“Together with our black soldier fly-based ingredients, we can further work towards healthy nutrition for all living creatures on this planet and enable a low-footprint society."

Over the next two years, the company intends to increase the production volumes of these insects by following a structured growth path.

Protix is also planning to work with its customers and develop new products for the conscious consumer.
