Kraft foods says it has managed to reduce its truck miles by more than 50 million since 2005, following the introduction of a new global sustainability project.
The company says it has managed to find alternatives to trucking where possible, as well as reducing inventory piles and introducing technologies that help further reduce its carbon footprint on the road.
Kraft vice-president of sustainability Steve Yucknut says, as an example, that the company replaced 10,000 truck shipments by shipping wheat along waterways to Toledo in Ohio.
"We think about miles, piles and idles when moving our product," he said. "We're finding ways to drive fewer miles, reduce inventory piles and eliminate idling trucks.
“We're collaborating with customers and suppliers [and] using a number of high-tech innovations for our trucks and warehouses to reduce energy and CO2 emissions."
It is also using rail where possible, which allows the company to ship larger loads in a more efficient manner.
