Legumex to build canola processing plant in US

14 September 2011

Canadian food processing company Legumex Walker is set to start construction of a $110m canola processing plant in Warden, Washington, US, on 21 September.

The plant, operated by the company's subsidiary Pacific Coast Canola, will be able to process 1,100mt of canola a day and is expected to produce approximately 142,500mt of expeller-pressed canola oil and 227,000mt of high-quality canola meal annually.

The facility, which is the company's first in the US, is scheduled to be completed by late 2012.

Legumex Walker president and CEO Joel Horn said the company believes this plant will generate hundreds of millions of dollars of economic activity over the next decade, in terms of direct employment and income to farmers and other sectors of the agricultural economy.

Currently, the company is in discussion with farmers to source feedstock.

Pacific Coast Canola is 85% owned by Legumex Walker and 15% by Glencore Grain Investment.
