Grain Craft agrees to purchase one million bushels of wheat from Indigo

US-based independent flour miller Grain Craft has signed an agreement with Boston-based Indigo Ag (Indigo) to purchase one million bushels of sustainably produced and identity-preserved wheat.

Indigo works with farmers in the US, helping them in growing healthy food by incorporating natural approaches with an objective to conserve natural resources for future generations.

As per the terms of the agreement, Indigo has agreed to deliver the wheat next year, where it will be milled into flour for baking, foodservice, and pizza customers.

Grain Craft chief supply chain officer Alan Koenig said: “At Grain Craft, we care about our flour – the quality, the way it’s produced, and the farmers who produce it.

“We are partnering with Indigo to produce traceable and sustainable flour at scale. This is a new way of doing business that’s responsive to the needs of our customers.”

Indigo noted that it uses naturally occurring plant microbes, along with software and data tools to increase yields of high-quality wheat seed varieties without additional inputs of chemicals or fertilizer.

Indigo president and CEO David Perry said: “Indigo’s goal is to increase farmer profitability using practices that are consistent with environmental sustainability and consumer health.

“Customers are increasingly willing to pay for improved quality, improved environmental sustainability, and traceability back to the farm.

“This sort of specialisation is good for everyone involved: the grower, the consumer, and the environment.”

Both organisations aim to produce flour that will meet the needs of both consumers as well as growers and address current challenges to grower profitability, environmental sustainability, and consumer health.
