Food consortium Consorzio Latterie Virgillio reduces, recycles and repurposes waste by producing biodiesel from animal fat.
The company recognised an opportunity to expand its product range by producing an animal fat spread and biodiesel. However, the processing of these animal fat by-products required a new processing line to be built and the firm approached a well-known engineering house to provide a processing solution.
Having worked with Russell Finex previously, the engineering house supplied the Self-Cleaning Russell Eco Filter® to Virgilio to remove oversize contamination from the liquid minced meat.
The unique design of the Self-Cleaning Russell Eco Filter® ensures that material passes through the filter screen while the screen is automatically cleaned using a rotating wiper inside the element.
The animal fat filtration units were customised to meet the exact requirements of the application, with the oversize outlet reduced in size to remove oversize contamination above 100 microns, which is then reworked.
A second unit was also supplied to act as a clean-in-place (CiP) system to circulate water with cleaning solution around the pipework.
Established in 1934, Russell Finex is a worldwide leader in separation technology. Contact the company to discover how its range of self-cleaning filters can assist your food processing needs.
