Pall - Process Engineering and Membrane Filtration Systems

There are countless examples of Pall solutions in the food industry. Pall provide products and services for process fluids as well as utilities.

Increasingly Pall membrane systems such as Pall® Pallsep™ or Pall Membralox® ceramic membranes are being applied to food and beverage processing areas once handled by centrifuges, vacuum filters and diatomaceous earth. The systems offer benefits of defined performance and fully enclosed sanitary systems.

Pall's industry experience is so extensive that individual knowledge hubs have been set up which consists of specific industry experts, with product and system ranges, designed to meet the needs of these individual markets.

Pall food and beverage knowledge hubs include:

BREWING – CLARIFICATION, FILTRATION, STABILIZATION AND YEAST RECOVERY

The beer-making process must meet high standards for preserving the unmistakable taste, flavor, purity and freshness of a particular brew. Creating that unique taste and maintaining uniformity of flavor from bottle to bottle, from brewery to brewery, from brand to brand requires delicate precision.

WINE AND SPRIT – FILTRATION SYSTEMS

From grape to bottle, one filtration company does it all. The wine-making process must meet high standards for preserving the special characteristics of any vintage. Creating a wine’s unique bouquet while maintaining uniformity of taste and intensity of flavour from bottle to bottle is a delicate balancing act.

SOFT DRINKS - MEMBRANE FILTRATION SYSTEMS

For the soft drinks industry, Pall filtration technology provides many benefits including the most important – the sparkling bright product consumers expect and demand. Proper filtration also helps to maintain the correct level of carbonation and protects filling heads and sparging elements from blockage by removing particulate material.

Pall’s membrane systems are used to produce consistently high quality feed water and to economically prepare raw water upon intake. This eliminates the need for sand filters, which are cumbersome and difficult to sanitize, and it also protects other water treatment equipment. A range of filter grades is also available to ensure appropriate microbiological control.

DAIRY - CERAMIC MEMBRANE FILTRATION SYSTEMS

Dairy products increasingly require membranes to improve and alter products to cater to modern consumer and regulatory demands. Membrane processing systems perform tasks as varied as concentration of milk proteins, separation of fat, bioburden reduction, purification of modifying enzymes, and cheese brine recovery. Pall ceramic membrane systems have a proven track record throughout the dairy industry.

CORN MILLING

Corn wet milling operations today provide large volumes of value-added products, from high-fructose corn syrup to other sweeteners and fermentation by products, to meet the demand for functional and economical ingredients in foods and beverages. Today, corn products are also increasingly being looked at as a biodegradable source of packaging materials.

BOTTLED WATER – FILTRATION AND ANALYSIS

Pall offers water bottlers an economical and complete line of filtration and laboratory products optimised for the filtration and analysis of bottled water as well as make-up water in beverage processes.

As a worldwide major supplier to the industry, applications include particulate removal, cyst and microbiological protection for bottled water, and sterile gas filtration for carbonation and counter pressure gases. We also provide a complete line of laboratory products designed to detect particulate and microbial contamination. We have developed the one-micron Absolife™ filter because we understand that protection from cysts is critical. This filter has been tested and certified to NSF Standard 53 by NSF International - the standard which was developed for and accepted by the bottled water industry as a valid certification.

CLARIFICATION IN FOOD PROCESSING

High solids, liquids, creams, emulsions and pastes are all processed economically with Pall membrane systems. Examples include clarification of fruit juices, beef tallow, sugar solutions, coffee, and other food additives. Pall hollow fibre membranes are used to clarify brine, gelatin and various water streams.
