Warburg / Halle (Westphalia) – Spice manufacturers are aware of the problem: the packaging accidentally tears open, and the content ends up everywhere but where it is supposed to be. Kobusch-Sengewald, supplier of specific packaging solutions, now offers a film for spice packaging which excels through improved tear resistance, and also has the advantage of velvet-like haptics. The film is a further development of the established metal-free barrier-layer film produced by Kobusch-Sengewald.
The metal-free barrier-layer film is laminated with a specific film. On the one hand, the tear resistance is substantially enhanced; on the other hand, the lamination of the film creates a velvet-like pleasant haptics. With a view to marketing, it is a suitable means to emphasise the quality of the product.
The advantages of a metal-free film still exist: the checking of the spice for metal residues can be accomplished at the packaged bag. With the aluminium bags normally used, the content must be checked for metal residues before packaging; otherwise, the detectors would react to the aluminium of the packaging.
In addition, the delivery times are shorter because the base material polyethylene is available more quickly than aluminium and thus, the metal-free bags can be manufactured more quickly. In comparison to metal rivals, the metal-free film is even less pricy on account of the lower production costs: the two-layer composite film is substantially thinner and therefore can be produced at a lower cost than the three-layer aluminium composites on the market. Nevertheless, in comparison it fulfils the same requirements.
The metal-free two-layer composite film may be varied in its properties not only by the selection of the outer layer. If the barrier-layer is enforced, the flavour-protection is increased; the thickness of the film as well as the type of the polyethylene used determines the water-vapour permeability, and thus the storage quality of the content. If it is laminated with PP, the film is suitable for 'A-B sealing,' with which a lap seal can be produced.
The film is available in white and transparent for bags with windows. It is not only an excellent packaging for spices; it also offers an optimal flavour protection for marinades, coffee and semi-baked products such as French sticks and bread. In addition, it can be used as a cover film for pasteurised antipasti.
