Symrise, a leading manufacturer of flavours, fragrances and raw materials and active ingredients for the perfume, cosmetics and food industries, has once again expanded its beverage production facilities at its Nördlingen site. Nördlingen specialises in developing beverage flavourings and raw materials and in manufacturing flavourings for the beverage industry.
Symrise has built a new pilot plant and an ultramodern laboratory for its applications and process technology research at an investment volume of €1.8 million. These facilities are specially designed for developing and processing natural raw materials, with the new pilot plant to be used for extracting and distilling plant materials such as herbs and spices.
The pilot plant will enhance the company's ability to produce high-quality distillates and extracts, which will be used as a basis for manufacturing flavourings and emulsions. This facility will be capable of simulating all relevant extraction and distillation processes, from development to industrial-scale production. "By investing in the pilot plant, we are clearly demonstrating that innovation is one of the most important tools we have for expanding our position as a leading flavourings manufacturer," says Frank von Keutz, who heads up the Beverages EAME business unit at Symrise.
NATURAL FLAVOURINGS FOR ORGANIC BEVERAGES
Growing consumer health-consciousness and the global wellness trend have also altered the beverage market, with consumers looking for more natural products and greater authenticity. Natural ingredients, earth-friendly manufacturing processes and healthier products are much in demand, and consumer appetite for organic beverages is rising steadily. Natural flavourings from Symrise are perfectly in tune with this health and wellness trend.
The newest Symrise extraction processes, for instance, make it possible to produce natural flavourings from oranges, lemons, and red fruits and berries while retaining their authentic flavour profiles. These are especially well-suited for applications in which only natural flavourings are permissible, thus serving as a foundation for what are known as 'clean label' products – an increasingly important category.
NEW AND EXOTIC FLAVOURINGS
New and exotic flavourings are also in demand on the global market; examples of these new, fashionable raw materials include lemon grass from Thailand and cherry blossoms from Japan. To process these materials, Symrise is working to adapt new experimental research methods, such as Symtrap®, a cutting-edge process for concentrating the flavour-yielding components of fruits.
STATE-OF-THE-ART FLAVOURING TECHNOLOGY
At its three beverage sites (Nördlingen, Braunschweig and Holzminden), Symrise unites its unique expertise in developing innovative flavourings with state-of-the-art technology. The Nördlingen investment once again underscores the technological advantage that Symrise enjoys over its international competition.
