Approval of TBHQ (E319) for Use in Food Applications in the European Union

04 August 2006

Following on from lobbying by multi-nationals, who wish to standardize their global specifications for edible oils and fats used in their products, the European Parliament and the Council have amended Directive 95/2/EC to approve the use of TBHQ in edible oils and fats used in food applications.

Smaller manufacturers will benefit from the efforts of the multi-nationals as they too will now be able to use TBHQ to add value to their products. These products include frying oils, margarine, shortening, snack foods, potato crisps, French fries, fast foods, salad dressings, biscuits/cookies/crackers, confectionary, coffee whiteners, peanut butter and pre-prepared foods.

This development will significantly improve product quality and will achieve cost savings as TBHQ is significantly more cost effective than other antioxidants used to retard oxidative degradation of edible oils and fats. Furthermore, users of TBHQ can expect increased customer satisfaction as products will remain fresh for longer and rancid odors will be avoided. This is as a result of the improved carry through properties of TBHQ in the oil or fat that is absorbed into the product.
